Stirling Castle

For over a century, the Great Hall of Stirling Castle was sub-divided and used as a military barracks. Troops were initially stationed here as part of the strategy to repel a Napoleonic invasion. Since the troops' departure in 1964, a huge amount of money and skill has been invested in returning the place to it former grandeur. The reconstituted roof, is said to be made of over a thousand tons of Scottish oak, from over 600 trees. This great place was the centre-piece of the Royal Court of the Stuart Kings, up until James VI of Scotland became James I of England and went South.
